Chair Caning and Cane Inserts

Chair Caning and Cane Inserts

Gentle Hands Restoration does chair caning and cane inserts for the Durham Region which includes Newcastle, Bowmanville, Courtice, Oshawa, Whitby, Brooklin, Ajax, Pickering, Uxbridge and Port Perry.  We also do chair caning and cane inserts for Port Hope, Cobourg, Lindsay, Scarborough and surrounding areas.

We do chair caning and cane inserts.  The difference between the two is as folllows:

Chair caning is a method of weaving rattan reed through the holes in the chair to create a chair seat.  It is a time consuming method and it is priced according to the number of holes in the seat of the chair.

Cane inserts are put in chairs that have a pre-existing groove around the edge of the seat.  We buy a pre-fabricated cane seat that is pushed into the groove with spline.  It is not nearly as time-comsuming as the weaving method and it is priced by a set amount times length times width.

We also do leather inserts for chairs and rocking chairs.   The insert would be cut to fit and then put in with decorative thumb tacks.

Because we have been so busy the last couple of years, we have been sending our caning jobs to a "Master Caner", Donald Robins of Newtonville.  His email address is drobins@sympatico.ca.  I would recommend "Donald" to anyone.
